Audra's versatility and breadth in her career as an artist is unparalleled. Audra has received seven Tony Awards, two Grammy Awards, as well as an Emmy Award. She was the recipient of record-breaking seven Tony Awards two Grammy Awards as well as an Emmy Award in 2015 she was ranked among Time magazine's 100 most influential individuals and was awarded the National Medal of Arts--America's highest award for accomplishment in the field--from the President Barack Obama. McDonald, who was born in Fresno California to a music family, completed her classical voice training in New York's Juilliard School. In 1994, a year after she graduated from Juilliard School, she won the Tony Award for "Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a the Musical" for her performance in Carousel. Over the next four years she won two more Tony Awards in the featured actress category, for her roles of performances in the Broadway productions Terrence McNally's play Master Class (1996) and his show Ragtime (1998) giving her an unheard of number of Tony Awards before the age of 30. The actress won his fourth Tony in 2004 when she starred alongside Sean Diddy Combs in A Raisin in the Sun as well as in 2012. In 2012, she took home five Tonys and her first award in the leading actress category for her performance on stage in The Gershwins Porgy and Bess in the lead role. In the year she received her 6th Tony award in 2014 Billie Holiday's portrayal in Lady Day in Emerson's Bar & Grill became the most prestigious Broadway show. In 2017, she also made her West End London West End debut, and was nominated for an Olivier Award. Along with recording the record for the highest number of competitive wins by an actor she also became the first to win the award in all four acting categories. The credits she has in the theater include The Secret Garden (1993) Marie Christine (993) Henry IV (2004) and 110 in the Shade (707). Twelfth Night was McDonald's Public Theater Shakespeare in the Park debut. Shuffle Along is the Making of the Musical Seduction in 1921 and the Drama That Followed. Frankie Johnny on the Clair de Lune. and Ohio State Murders. McDonald first appeared on television as a dramatic actor on the Peabody Award winner CBS series Having Our Say - The Delany Sisters' First 100 years. Her next appearance was that of a regular actor in NBC's Law & Order Special Victims Unit where she appeared with Kathy Bates and Victor Garber. McDonald's debut Emmy was for the HBO film version of the The Pulitzer Prize-winning Wit. Produced by Mike Nichols with Emma Thompson as the lead, McDonald then returned to television networks in 2003. She starred in Mister Sterling and produced by Emmy Award winner Lawrence O'Donnell Jr. The Bedford Diaries on the WB at the beginning of 2006, and Kidnapped, NBC. McDonald was awarded a fourth Emmy nomination in recognition of her part in the HBO film special Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill in the year the year 2016. The Bite is a drama with six episodes based on a pandemic, coproduced with Spectrum Originals & CBS Studios. She appeared alongside Taylor Schilling & Steven Pasquale. Having first appeared in the role of U.S. attorney Liz Lawrence in 2009 on CBS's medical comedy The Good Wife in 2018 McDonald reprised the character (now called Liz Reddick) as a season regular on The Good Fight on Paramount+ receiving 3 Critics Choice Award nominations for her role. She is currently appearing as a guest in Julian Fellowes' historical drama The Gilded Age on HBO.
